NST
Non-Stress Test (NST) is a common prenatal test used to monitor the well-being of the baby during pregnancy. It measures the baby's heart rate in response to their movements, providing valuable insights into fetal health. Dr. Preeti Gupta, an experienced gynecologist, utilizes the NST to assess how well the baby is coping with the pregnancy, especially in high-risk pregnancies or when there are concerns about fetal health.
During the NST, a special device is attached to the mother’s abdomen to monitor the baby’s heart rate and contractions. The test typically lasts for about 20 to 40 minutes, and it is non-invasive and painless. The baby’s heart rate is expected to increase with movement, which indicates a healthy, responsive fetus. A reactive NST (normal result) shows at least two accelerations in the baby's heart rate within a 20-minute period, while a non-reactive NST may require further testing to determine the cause of concern.
Dr. Gupta uses the NST to monitor fetal health in cases such as post-term pregnancy, gestational diabetes, hypertension, or if there are concerns about fetal growth. It is also used when there are reduced fetal movements or if the mother is experiencing complications. The results from the NST help Dr. Gupta make informed decisions about the next steps in managing the pregnancy, which may include further monitoring, additional tests, or inducing labor if necessary.
Dr. Gupta ensures that her patients are fully informed about the purpose and procedure of the NST, providing them with a calm and supportive environment throughout the process. The NST is a crucial tool in her comprehensive approach to maternal and fetal care, helping ensure that both mother and baby remain healthy and safe during pregnancy.
